Ivana Helsinki, a successful Finnish fashion label, has made a breakthrough by becoming the first Finnish fashion brand to make it to New York Fashion Week, held in September 2010.
The event, which includes designers such as Michael Kors, Anna Sui and Tommy Hilfiger, will showcase Ivana Helsinki’s S/S 2011 collection, named “Where the fuck is my sailor”. Crude, but attention grabbing.
For those not so familiar with Ivana Helsinki, the artist behind the brand is Paola Ivana Suhonen. The company was founded by Paola Suhonen and her sister Pirjo Suhonen in 1998. Since its establishment, Ivana Helsinki has been known for the hand labor, high quality materials, bright colors and in-house print designs which have distinguished the brand from many of its competitors.
As I was reading about Ivana Helsinki, I came across an article which explained more about Paola Ivana Suhonen and how she has also done product development, print and concept designing for several companies like Topshop, Swarovski, Coca-Cola and even Google, to mention a few. Today the designer is living in New York to pursue her vision and career. No doubt this new habitat has increased her chances at getting involved in major fashion events, such as the New York Fashion Week.
Here’s one of Ivana Helsinki’s latest shows at Copenhagen Fashion Week 2010.
Not only is the presence of Ivana Helsinki at the New York Fashion Week considered a historical achievement for Finnish fashion, but it will also further the brands opportunities in establishing a name for itself in North America. In addition, Ivana Helsinki will be sold in the stores of American Anthropologie, which sells women’s clothing, accessories, and home decor. Sounds like a pretty accurate place for a brand like Ivana Helsinki.
I really like Ivana Helsinki and I’m looking forward to seeing the new Spring/Summer 2011 collection.

No bitch-legacy would undermine the powers of Scandinavian beauty, Nordic architecture, as the Suhonen duo accepted their explosive tabloid status, thanks to the New York self-proclaimed ‘Madonna’.
