Zero fabric waste Fashion designer, Timo Rissanen

What’s the best way to keep jeans looking good and new? No, it’s not by washing them inside out, and it’s not by ironing them on a low heat. Brace yourself, it’s by sticking them in the freezer.

I just came across Finnish designer Timo Rissanen and his novel idea of freezing jeans in order to maintain them. The 35-year old designer, who teaches at the Parsons the New School for Design in New York, encourages people to treat their clothes well and with care and to practice what they preach.

What fascinated me the most was this curious idea of freezing your jeans. Timo Rissanen, himself, freezes his jeans because their constant washing consumes and destroys the fabric and more importantly strains the environment.

Jil Sander Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear Collection

I think the critics might be onto something. I feel this is one my favourite collections for Spring 2011. I’m not sure if my personal opinion and view stem from the same as that of the rest of the critics, but I’ve nonetheless come to regard the Jil Sander Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection as one of the nicest and brightest I’ve seen in a long time.

From Florence to San Remo, my journey has moved from one Italian city to the next. If I compare the cities that I’ve seen so far to each other, my biggest observation is with the way people dress. Florence without a doubt is the city where people dress most stylishly. I’m currently in the great [...]

What Makes Italian Men Look So Stylish?

September 22, 2010
Thumbnail image for What Makes Italian Men Look So Stylish?

During my current travels in Italy, I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on the style sense of the Italians, if not for any other apparent reason at least for the fact that Italians are always praised for their stylishness and eye for fashion. I have to admit, the more Italian style I see, the less [...]

I have recently discovered a new and pretty unique designer, Luca Bertoni, who makes incredibly fascinating men’s clothing. I would probably characterize his designs as somewhat surreal and very out of the usual, but at the same time even more so interesting. I mean, where can this kind of inspiration come from? Born in 1988 [...]

Are you familiar with Presenter Fearne Cotton? I got to know her during the years I spent living in London some years back. Let me start by saying that when I first heard that Victoria Beckham got into fashion design, I wasn’t convinced at all. Quite the opposite. I was even playing with ideas that perhaps Victoria Beckham has no hand in the creation of her collections. So after a period of time when she started coming up [...]

As I read the sentence: “British designers and creatives are renowned for their ability to set the global fashion agenda”, I felt impelled to find out whether I actually thought that’s an accurate statement.  And what a better place to start to unravel my pondering than the yearly British Fashion Awards which celebrates just that:  [...]

What’s one of the hardest things to buy? Well, for me, at the very top of the list are sunglasses.  How many times have you found yourself in search of great sunglasses and ending up leaving every store frustrated and bummed as nothing looked good on you? I can’t even count how many times it’s [...]

Something I often think: Do silver and gold go together? I remember a time when it used to really preoccupy my thoughts that I would try to ensure that I never had silver and gold on at the same time. I don’t know what it was, really. It just felt wrong in some peculiar way. [...]

Don’t you just love the feel of silk and chiffon on your skin? The lushness of silk, and the delicacy and femininity of chiffon. I happen to think that these are two fabrics, that will never go out of fashion. Put a silk or chiffon blouse on with either a skirt or a pair of [...]
