Just today as I was walking in the city in search of some style inspiration, I started to think, what is fashion really about and how are we supposed to utilise it continuously. I mean, we are bombarded with new trends every month, if not every week. So is the idea that we’re supposed to be shopping for something new at the same speed as new trends hit the stores?
What I realised was that in order to keep up with fashion it doesn’t mean that you need to buy something new all the time. No, not at all. It means that you can just see what’s considered the hottest look of the moment, as deemed by fashion experts. So the key to keeping up with trends is not to go all crazy and follow every fashion tip to the T. The idea is to know how to take some inspiration from those looks and add it to your existing style.
Let me give you an example. Orange is said to be the colour of this summer. So to be in line with this colour trend, you could just opt for orange accessories by putting on some orange nail polish or wearing some orange jewellery. For me this represents a better understanding of fashion than feeling compelled to run to the high street the first chance you get to buy some orange clothes.
And even though fashion is almost solely about aesthetics, it need not and should not lack reason. And always remember to keep it subtle. Less is more.
